Videoconferencing is a method of extending your classrooms to participants at different locations. Research shows there are educationally effective videoconferencing approaches and techniques. Awareness of these approaches will assist you in preparing for and delivering sound educational videoconferencing.
Objectives:
- Determine if videoconferencing is the best technology for the teaching situation
- Discuss videoconferencing best practices for educational situations
- List recommended procedures to use before, during, and after a videoconference
- List several methods to engage participants in a videoconferencing session
- List several methods that encourage interaction among participants in the videoconference

Effectively Using VoiceThread for Teaching and Learning

VoiceThread is a web-based application that allows you to upload various types of digital media into a slideshow presentation, share it with others, and then allow participants to make comments via audio or text comment. These asynchronous comments can be done via microphone, web cam, telephone, text, or uploaded audio file. Penn State has adopted its own instance of this application, known as VoiceThread at Penn State. It is a fully supported service at Penn State.
This workshop will focus on the pedagogical uses of VoiceThread, including discussions around real VoiceThread examples from instructors at Penn State, current best practices for integration into a course, and other strategies for using this tool in teaching and learning practices.
Objectives:
- Access the VoiceThread at Penn State support site to find key information around use cases, best practices, help, and other information for using VoiceThread for teaching and learning
- Discuss best practices for using VoiceThread
- Identify and discuss various strategies and designs for using VoiceThread
The Active Classroom: Effective Clicker Use

Clickers (student response systems) are wireless handheld devices that allow students to respond to classroom polls and quizzes regardless of class size and common student dynamics. These simple remotes transmit individual student responses. This workshop will focus on strategies for improving a class through discussion and student participation. Best practices, writing good clicker questions, and strategies for fostering student interaction and analysis of course materials will be discussed.

- Discuss best practices for using clickers in a class
- Discuss strategies to improve class discussions using clickers
Lunch & Learn: Clickers in the Classroom - Pedagogical Best Practices

This interactive workshop is intended for faculty and staff interested in getting the most out of in-class use of student response systems (clickers). The speaker will be Professor Mary Beth Kramer, Instructor of Chemistry at University of Delaware, who utilizes clickers in both large and small classes.
Among the subjects the workshop will cover are the following:
- Writing good clicker questions
- Utilizing "peer instruction" and other types of questions
- Best practices when implementing clickers
- Assigning different kinds of points for answering questions
This workshop is ideal for both first-time clicker users as well as experienced users. Lunch will be provided.

The Penn State Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology will be held Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, University Park. This free event is an opportunity for faculty to share innovative uses of technology to enhance teaching, learning, and research with their colleagues. This year's theme is "Embracing Change and the Culture of Teaching and Learning."
The keynote speaker will be Jane McGonigal, director of game research and development at the Institute for the Future, a nonprofit futures research group based in Palo Alto, California, and creative director at http://SocialChocolate.com/, a game development startup. McGonigal, who holds a Ph.D. in performance studies, is the author of the New York Times best seller "Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World"(http:// www.amazon.com/Reality-Broken-Games-Better-Change/dp/1594202850/). Her best-known game development work includes "Find the Future"(http://findthefuture.nypl.org/), and "World without Oil" (http://worldwithoutoil.org/). These games have been featured in the New York Times, Wired, and The Economist, and on MTV, CNN, and NPR.
